I Dream of Chang and Eng, featuring Philip Kan Gotanda (December 6, 2011)
Close to two hundred people attended this exciting event hosted by the Friends of the Library, which featured research presentations from Professor Heidi Kim’s English 265 Honors class, unstaged readings of excerpts from Philip Gotanda’s new play I Dream of Chang and Eng, and a conversation with Philip Gotanda talking about his inspirations and aims in chronicling the remarkable lives of Eng and Chang Bunker, the original Siamese twins. Items from Wilson Library’s North Carolina Collection and Gallery and the Southern Historical Collection were highlighted in the presentations and an exhibit which ran for several weeks. Two descendants of the twins were in attendance, making this event even more special.
Sponsors of this event were the Friends of Wilson Library, the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, the Provost’s Performing Arts Special Activities Fund, Honors Carolina, the Institute for the Arts and Humanities, the Southern Historical Collection, and the North Carolina Collection.
